This coin is the only golden circulation coin of Europe after World War II. It was issued to commemorate the millennium of Babenberg dynasty - the creators of Austria.

The coins were struck in 1976 in two series. There exist slight differences in coins colours coming from different series. The coin appeared to be so successful that the entire mintage was distributed basically already on the issue day.
