interesting facts:
Coins with face values 1, 2 and 5 stotinki were produced from CuAlNi alloy in 1999. Starting 2000 a cheaper alloy of bronze-plated steel was used.

Dated to 8th century the Proto-bulgarian relief the Madara Rider (Мадарски конник) was hewn in a cliff at the height of 23 m from the base. It has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979 as the only object of this type in Europe. It shows a natural-sized horse rider (probably Bulgarian Emperor Tervel) killing a lion with a spear. There is a dog running behind the horse (probably a hound).
