In the end of August 1944 when the Soviet Red Army was approaching to Bulgaria, leaders of the Bulgarian Communistic Party announced an uprising against the monarchy and Bulgarian government, who were officially supporting Germans during the World War II. On September 6, strikes of factory workers began in several Bulgarian towns. Two days later the Soviet army crossed Bulgarian border and on September 9 units of communistic partisans arrived from their hideouts in mountains to towns and villages. On the same day in Sofia communists took over most strategic objects and institutions of the capital and the coup d'état was announced on the radio. The September 9 was therefore accepted as the beginning of the socialistic revolution in Bulgaria and the date 9 IX 1944 was placed in the national Coat of Arms.

Figures of male and female partisans visible on this coin's reverse are coming from the Mound of Brotherhood (Братска могила) from Sofia. The monument was constructed in 1956 to respect all dead defenders of Bulgaria's freedom.
