Bulgarian nation owes to Russians regaining independence, when after the won war against Turkey in 1878 Tsar Alexander recommended a creation of Bulgaria on conquered lands.

A piece of the painting by Andrei Nikolaievich Popov from 1893 showing one episode of the Russian-Turkish war - the Defence of the Eagle's Nest (Защитата на Орлово гнездо), which became an inspiration for the designer of this coin.
