Ship wreck of Kyrenia type was discovered in 1967 close to the city of Kyrenia (today Northern Cyprus) After dating the wreck to 4th century BC it appeared that this is the only preserved ship of the ancient Greeks and at the same time the oldest merchant ship. The vessel was carrying cargo of 400 amphorae with wine, which were excavated together with the hull and made accessible for visitors at the museum in the castle of Kyrenia. Cypriots constructed a replica of the ship in 1985, which was named Kyrenia II, and in 2002 another one named Kyrenia Liberty.
