Coins of this type were gradually replaced with copper-plated steel coins of the same face value. This type was officially withdrawn only in 2009, but in fact banks have been intercepting aluminum coins that fall into their hands since 1996.

A rocky hill in a strategic position at the mouth of the river Morava into Danube were inhabited as early as the 8th century and shortly afterwards reinforced by walls. The Devin castle (Devínsky hrad in Slovak) was being gradually expanded by the Moravian dukes and counts and along with investments grew its strategic importance. In the 15th century, on a distinctive monadnock right at the river a gun-tower was built, which became the inspiration for the designer of the reverse of this coin. After defeating the power of the Turks at Vienna in 1683, the Devin castle lost its defensive significance. It was eventually blown up by Napoleon's troops in 1809 and has remained to this day in the form of ruins, which were opened to the public in 1961.
