interesting facts:
In the 16th and 17th centuries Palanga was the most important seaport of Lithuania and an important centre on amber mining,
which resembles the amber necklace in today's coat of arms of the town. The harbour was destroyed by the Swedes in 1701 and the
city immediately lost its importance. Only in the 19th century a wooden pier was constructed and the first summer residences appeared
which gradually made the town a relaxation area. In 1952 Palanga acquired the status of resort, and since then it has expanded its
sanatorium infrastructure and health services.
